Seán Garvey from Cahirsiveen, Co. Kerry has long been
considered by aficionados as one of Ireland's finest
traditional singers, with equal facility in both Irish
and English languages. He is also a highly accomplished
player of guitar, flute and tenor-banjo.
Seán's first solo C.D., "ón dTalamh Amach/
Out Of The Ground", was launched in l998 to great
critical acclaim.
Reviews of Seán's first C.D.:
'Mastered, eloquent, intense singing and playing of the
highest order make this one of the best albums of the
last decade'.
Geoff Wallis, the Rough Guide to Irish Music
'....a classic in its genre and a 'must have' for any
serious collector''.
P.J. Curtis, World Music authority.
'....a dazzling anthology...a landmark among releases
of recordings of traditional music and song'.
C. McHale, The Living Tradition, music magazine
'..a smouldering multi-dimensional voice..the singer's
enveloping velvetness... plumbs a chasmic, nasal sadness
in Barr na Sráide'.
Fintan Vallely, Sunday Tribune, national newspaper.
'....out and out brilliance...a fine rich voice ..
..strong stuff and well worth the wait'.
Sarah McQuaid, Evening Herald, national newspaper.
His second C.D., "The Bonny Bunch of Roses" has just
been released.
Reviews of Seán's second C.D.:
"Always honest and passionate. Sean is unique and one
of my favourite singers"
Aine Hensey, RTE national radio & Radio na Gaelteachta
"....this truly sumptuous album"
Geoff Wallis, Folk Music Authority & Critic,

Seán's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes classic
songs in both Irish and English. He has received a
number of awards and accolades for his singing,
including the All Ireland Senior title in l982.
On-stage he will sing a sean-nos song at its rawest and
most emotionally intense, or songs sensitively
accompanied by his own guitar playing. His set also
incorporates rhythmically varied instrumental music,
mainly on flutes and guitar, from the riches of the
Irish music tradition.
Known in Ireland as a 'singer's singer', Seán is also a
highly respected authority on the Irish music tradition.
He is an honours graduate of Irish Language and Folklore
from University College Dublin and has an M.A. in
Ethnomusicology from Limerick University. He enjoys
combining the roles of guest speaker/performer/educator
in a wide variety of cultural forums.
